Section 1, Unit 6: Ask questions about food
Now we are back to food items again with more details about Korean food items and review about nationality related to food. This time for grammar we will look at how to say This.

In English we just have the word "this" for something close by. But in Korean "this" (이) has to go directly before a noun like "this food" (이 음식). If we are just pointing at something and saying "this", then in Korean we say "this thing" or "this one" (이것 or 이거). 이거 is the more frequently used in spoken Korean. 이것 is slightly more formal or in written text. Duolingo teaches 이것, but in spoken Korean you would often hear 이거 instead.
Example
이것은 밥이에요
This is rice
Example with 이건 (same meaning as 이것은 )
근데 이건 아니야.
But this is not it.
Example
이 밥은 한국 음식이에요
This rice is Korean food.
