Section 1, Unit 8: Talk about your hobbies

This unit is about hobbies and being a fan of something. For grammar we expanded question words from questions about numbers 몇 to what 뭐 and saying "also" 도 is introduced. The concept of "This"  (이) was described for unit 7.
I am introducing a section on analyzing an advanced sentence because I think the sentences are getting more advanced now, even if the grammar points have been covered and I want to show how we put them together.

Grammar Point: Also/even 도

This is covered in Talk to me in korean book 2, lesson 13
도 can mean "also", "too", or "even" and it attaches after a person or noun.

Person or noun +

도 replaces other particles like 는/은, and particles we will learn about later (를/을 and 이/가). The noun that 도 attaches to is added to what was previously mentioned. The meaning changes depending on the word 도 attaches to as seen in the examples below. If nothing was previously mentioned, and the speaker is surprised or is emphasizing something,  도 can mean "even" instead of "also".

Example
물 주세요 (me too)
Please give water to me too (not just the others)

Example
 주세요 (water too)
Please give me water too (not just other things)

Example "also"
없고 남친 없고.
아빠 없다, 왜!
I also have no money, no boyfriend, and no dad! So what?

Example "even"
지금 이렇게 옆에 있고
Even now, you're by my side.

Grammar Point: 뭐 what

The rule for 뭐 is the same as for 몇: The question word is placed where the information would be in the answer sentence. But the sentence is a little different for this type of question.

Example
이 배우의 취미는 축구예요
This actor's hobby is soccer.

To make it into a question we replace "soccer" with .
이 배우의 취미는 예요?
What is this actor's hobby?

Example
뭐예요?
What is it?

Advanced sentence analysis example

Example sentence:
제 여동생도 이 유명한 미국 축구 선수 팬이에요

To dissect this, we should divide it into parts that belong together.
제 여동생 = my younger sister
도 = "also" or "even"
이 유명한 미국 축구 선수 = this famous American soccer player (same word order in Korean as in English)
팬이에요 = is a fan

도 replaces other particles that would normally be used here as seen above. In this case likely 는 indicating the topic.
Let's start by combining the topic "my younger sister" with the verb "is a fan".
제 여동생 팬이에요
My younger sister is a fan.

Then we add 도:
제 여동생도 팬이에요
My younger sister is also a fan (default), or
My younger sister is a fan too, or
Even my younger sister is a fan (if the speaker is surprised by this or putting emphasis).

Then let's add what the sister is a fan of: "this famous American soccer player". It goes just before "팬이에요" because it describes who she is a fan of. Consider it similar to an adjective like "delicious" in  맛있는 고기예요 (it is delicious meat) that goes right before the noun.

And so we end up with:
제 여동생도 이 유명한 미국 축구 선수 팬이에요
Even my younger sister is a fan of this famous American soccer player.
